The magic of the Irish Midlands is something to be experienced, not just talked about. Where better to kick off your adventure than the lovely Laois? Though overlooked at times, the county is steeped in rich history, yet to be explored by you!

The Stony Man: Ridge of Capard

26 minutes’ drive from the hotel

If you’re thinking of taking a trip to Portlaoise, we’re positive you’ll have heard of the Slieve Bloom mountains. Once among the highest in Europe at 3,700 metres, they have weathered to 527 metres. As these picturesque hills sit in the central plain of the Midlands, you can see all four provincial high points of Ireland on a clear day! On the Ridge of Capard trail route, there’s a stone cairn called “The Stony Man”. The cairn was built when quarrying was practiced in Laois. There are six walking trails to explore on this mountain range. Be sure to bring your hiking boots if you’re up for delving into the hidden history of the Irish Midlands.

Rock of Dunamase

11 minutes’ drive from the hotel

Known as one of the most popular historic attractions in Laois, the impressive fortress dominates the landscape. Most of the fortress’ ruins are as old as the 12th and 13th century, but evidence of earlier structures can be found. The ruins were abandoned in the 14th century, but fortunately, it’s now open to the public all year round. This remarkable stronghold is well worth a visit!

The Great Heath of Maryborough

8 minutes’ drive from the hotel

Known locally as ‘The Heath’ and only 5km from the Rock of Dunamase, why not check it out on your way back? The land once known as Maryborough was the old name for Portlaoise. Once an assembly point in ancient times, it was used for chariot races and communal festivities. The Portlaoise bypass now runs through the land. Many historical objects were uncovered here during the construction of the motorway. Among these were iron, bronze, and stone artefacts and even burial remains. Particularly lovely in summertime, the land rich in history is flowered in heather and furze blossoms.

Abbeyleix Heritage House

10 minutes’ drive from the hotel

For the fans of Irish history, you simply must check out this fantastic museum of Irish history and culture. You’ll be transported back in time in what was once home to the Abbeyleix Carpet Factory. It was also once a 19th-century boy’s school. You’ll learn about the Norman influence, the suppression of Irish monasteries and the industrial revolution. The site can also be linked to the most famous ship in the world, the Titanic. Some of the hand-tufted carpets were made for the staterooms onboard the ship. With free parking, a craft and gift shop, and even a children’s playground, a visit to the Heritage House should be on your list.

Morrissey’s Pub

12 minutes’ drive from the hotel

After you’ve visited Abbeyleix Heritage House why not pop into Morrisey’s for a bite to eat? Sitting in the 2nd oldest pub in Ireland and the 5th oldest in the world, you’ll feel as though you’ve gone back in time. First opened in 1775 as a grocery shop and ‘shebeen’ (an unlicensed private house selling alcohol), it was later rebuilt in the 1880s. Rich in history and culture, the pub has preserved much of its old-style charm, with many vintage artefacts and old trinkets on display. Be sure to stop off at this traditional Irish pub before you go!
